The Egyptian government has a vested interest in manipulating the truth about the situation for several reasons. First, the Egyptian government wants to be known as a country that can capably handle terrorist problems with professionalism and expertise. This would give them credibility and respect in the world community and earn them a reputation of having counter-terrorist forces that can “get the job done” on a par with Western nations. Additionally, the key Egyptian counter-terror organization, known as Unit 777, have a less than stellar track record in storming hijacked planes and rescuing victims of terrorism, having bungled a major operation on Cyprus decades ago which left many hostages killed or wounded. In fact, during the operation, the Egyptians had failed to notify the Cyprus security forces that they would be conducting the rescue operation and became involved in a deadly firefight with Cypriot authorities, who believed the commandos were terrorist reinforcements. The Egyptians are eager to salvage their reputation.

At the present time, it is unclear precisely how good Egypt’s anti-terror forces are, seeing as the Egyptian government keeps a tight lid on military and security matters, being suspicious of espionage. It is estimated that Unit 777 consists of about 230 soldiers and undergoes the typical curriculum of anti-terror training. Unit 777 trains with Western forces annually during the Bright Star exercises and this may have gone some way towards improving their effectiveness. But until they have a public concrete opportunity to show what they can do, it’s all speculation.

In 1978, Task Force 777 was dispatched to Cyprus in response to the hijacking of a Cyprus Air passenger aircraft by operatives of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). The operation was organized hastily, and Egyptian authorities failed to notify Cyprus of the arrival of the unit. As the TF 777 operators approached the plane on the tarmac, they were mistaken by the Cyprus security forces as terrorist reinforcements. A firefight ensued, costing the lives of 15 members of the unit and several Cypriots.

In 1985, Task Force 777 was dispatched again to deal with a hijacking, this time to Malta. An Egypt Air Boeing 737 (EgyptAir Flight 648) had landed in Luqa Airport under the control of Abu Nidal faction terrorists, purportedly as retaliation for Egypt’s failure to protect the terrorists that had hijacked the MS Achille Lauro earlier that year. Several hostages were released, and at least one Israeli woman was executed.[4] Although the operation was planned more carefully this time, the TF 777 operators committed several mistakes that would eventually prove fatal to many of the hostages[5]. As explosives were detonated to attempt to blow a hole on the top of the airframe, the explosion ripped through the cabin area, immediately killing 20 passengers [6]. Using the same hole, the operators gained entry to the plane but in the confusion opened fire indiscriminately and killed and injured more passengers. In the ensuing chaos, passengers that managed to flee the plane were then gunned down by snipers in positions around the airport who mistook them for terrorists attempting to escape. The total number of passengers killed was 57, out of 88 total.[7]

After the outcomes of their first two major operations, Task Force 777 was temporarily disbanded, and formed again later to deal with internal threats, primarily against the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Egyptian Republican Guard is a Division level command within the Egyptian Army, designed to be a heavily armored division with the main responsibility to defend the Capital of the Republic, mainly the major governmental and strategic industrial institutions.

The Republican guard is under the control of the Ministry of Defense. Its current commander is Major General Samy Dyab. The Republican Guard Division is the only significant military unit allowed in central Cairo, apart from the intelligence services’ military branches.

It was originally created to be Nasser‘s bodyguard and known as the National Guard , being mainly a paramilitary force but was expanded into a large military force, first at a brigade level in the 70s and the 80s then augmented at a division level and incorporated under the Armored Corps.

Secondary duties are to protect presidential sites and important public buildings in Cairo, provide Honor Guard and security services for the highest national personalities and important foreign guests; and responding to any rebellion, coup, or other threat to Presidential power. Members were (mainly but not exclusively) highly motivated volunteers rather than conscripts. They received bonuses, new cars and subsidized housing, and received greater training than the regular army.

The Armed Forces of Egypt are the largest on the African continent and one of the largest in the world (ranked 11th), consisting of the Egyptian Army, Egyptian Navy, Egyptian Air Force and Egyptian Air Defense Command.

Egypt has provided military assistance and training to a number of African and Arab states. Although not a NATO member, Egypt remains a strong military and strategic partner and is a participant in NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue forum. The Egyptian military is one of the strongest in the region[1], and gives Egypt regional military supremacy rivaled only by Israel [2], besides being the strongest in Africa [3][4]. Egypt is the only Arab country with a spy satellite and has launched another one in 2007.[5]

The Egyptian Air Force or EAF is the aviation branch of the Egyptian Armed Forces. Currently, the backbone of the EAF is the F-16. The EAF (planes and Pilot training) is considered to be the strongest in Africa and one of the strongest in the Middle East. The Mirage 2000 is the other modern interceptor used by the EAF. The Egyptian Airforce has 240 F-16s (plus 24 on order) making it the 4th largest operator of the F-16 in the World. It has about 579 combat aircraft and 149 armed helicopters as it continues to fly extensively upgraded MiG-21s, F-7 Skybolts, F-4 Phantoms, Dassault Mirage Vs, and the C-130 Hercules among other planes. The Air Force is undergoing massive modernization. Mikoyan confirmed that talks with Egypt are underway for the sale of 40 Mig-29SMT jet-fighters, with a possible additional batch of 60-80 planes.

National Guard: under the control of the Ministry of Defense and numbers about 60,000 personnel and they are mainly for ceremonials and parades. The National Guard is not a part of the Corps, it is rather for the defence of the Presidential institution and the Capital.

Border Guard Forces: under the control of the Ministry of Defense. The Border Guard is a lightly armed paramilitary unit of about 25,000 personnel, mostly Bedouins, responsible for border surveillance, general peacekeeping, drug interdiction, and prevention of smuggling. During the late 1980s, the force was equipped with remote sensors, night-vision binoculars, communications vehicles, and high-speed motorboats.

Coast Guard: is responsible for the onshore protection of public installations near the coast and the patrol of coastal waters to prevent smuggling. With a force of 5,000 personnel, it has an inventory consisting of about thirty five large patrol craft (each between twenty and thirty meters in length) and twenty smaller Bertram-class coastal patrol craft built in the United States.

Bright Star is a joint exercise including air, ground, and naval elements. It is a central method for United States Central Command to build cooperation and readiness of allied nations within and around the Middle East.

Specifically, the exercise consists of coalition interoperability training, called Affiliation Training to teach nations how to operate with one another in a wartime environment, a Command Post Exercise designed to help standardize command and control procedures, and a large scale Field Training Exercise to practice everything together.

فى الوقت الذى تخوض فيه مصر معركة طاحنة مع دول حوض النيل للحفاظ على حصتها من المياه، نجد أن ذلك لم يؤثر على وزارتى الزراعة والرى لإعادة تسعير المياه التى يحصل عليها أحد أشهر المستثمرين، مع إيقاف التنفيذ، فى توشكى، وهو الوليد بن طلال، الذى يحصل على المياه حسب العقد الذى أبرمته معه وزارة الزراعة، بـ4 قروش لأول 5 آلاف متر مكعب لكل فدان، و5 قروش لـ1000 متر مكعب التالية لكل فدان، والأمتار المكعبة التالية لكل فدان 6 قروش.
