Employees at the Central Auditing Organization, the country’s corruption watchdog, continue their protests against their director, Gawdat el-Malt, accusing him of involvement in corruption. Ironically, el-Malt had assumed some hero status among some after a number of stunts at the parliament and in the media over the past year, where he exposed some corruption cases. But the striking employees accuse their boss of turning a blind eye to more corruption cases, failing to publicize reports “which remained on the shelves” and never saw the light. The civil servants are also demanding the complete Independence of the CAO from any executive authority to be able to monitor and act against corruption without interferences. Officially the CAO is under the supervision of the presidency.

Thirty days have passed since the Union of Real Estate Tax Authority employees handed in their papers to the Labor Ministry. According to Egyptian labor law, if the Ministry had any reservations or reasons for rejecting the union they should have announced it during that period of time… which hasn’t happened.
This means, with local and international recognition secured, the Labor Ministry has no other choice but to deal with the free union activists as the legitimate representatives of the 55,000 Real Estate Tax Collectors.
